Richard is a
USA Today editorial board member and widely acknowledged national education expert. He has been awarded a Knight Fellowship to attend Stanford University and a Journalism Fellowship in Child and Family Policy at the University of Maryland. His forthcoming book is Boy Troubles: Rescuing Boys from Their Academic Slide, a provocative investigation of the crisis in boys' education and their downward spiral of worsening school performance, diminishing college prospects and reduced career opportunities. The book, which questions the conventional wisdom, identifies the core reasons for this decline and offers solutions that are already working in several schools around the country, sold at auction to Broadway Books/Random House.

Richard and his work on this topic have already received advance praise from a wide range of experts.
Steve Inskeep, co-host of NPR’s Morning Edition, says "Richard Whitmire is an influential voice on a subject that matters to all of us.  He's explaining uncomfortable truths that many Americans have overlooked." Michael Gurian, author of The Minds Of Boys and The Wonder Of Boys, says "Long before it became popular, Richard Whitmire was writing about the issues boys face in school.  His in-depth perspective, powerful writing style and professionalism continue to open the eyes of millions of readers to the reality of boys' lives in America today." Michelle Norris, co-host of NPR's All Things Considered, says "Richard Whitmire was one of the first journalists to raise questions and, eventually, alarms about the growing mound of evidence that boys are consistently lagging behind girls in the classroom. Thanks in large part to Richard's work in this area, educators are giving this subject the attention it deserves."
