The past few months have been busy, as we sold a number of new books for clients. ![]()
Father and son team of organic farmer Terry Harrison
and science journalist Laird Harrison are
completing Fresh: How Local Food Can Save
the American Meal. The book is a thoughtful, balanced investigation of
the ways that globalization is changing what we eat. Engaging,
insightful and beautifully written, Fresh will do for the
supermarket tomato what Fast Food Nation did for the Big Mac. Antonia
Fusco acquired Fresh for Algonquin Books in
a hotly contested auction.
Jennifer
Kasius at Running Press/Perseus books acquired Chuck Acquisto's touching and inspirational Dear Nick: Letters of
Success at auction, a collection of letters of advice to the author's
infant son, which he solicited from a wide
range of famous and successful individuals including sports legends, politicians, and beloved
entertainers. He received replies from hundreds of notables,
including nine baseball Hall of Famers, eight Academy Award winners, seven
golfing legends, six Heisman Trophy recipients, five best-selling authors,
four Top 40 singers, three famous attorneys, two former U.S. Presidents
(and the current President) and a "Patridge Family" star. The
author will donate all proceeds from the book to The Good Tidings
Foundation, a San Francisco-based charity that awards service scholarships
to deserving high school students and builds athletic facilities in
inner-city neighborhoods.
Craig Conley's One-Letter
Words: A Dictionary
was acquired by Alison Callahan at HarperCollins with an aggressive
pre-empt offer. Craig is a linguist and textbook author whose latest
book is a surprising and fascinating compendium of 1,000+ definitions
of the 26 letters of the English alphabet and an essential desk
companion for puzzle lovers, wordsmiths, trivia buffs, know-it-alls,
armchair linguists and all kinds of word lovers. HarperCollins'
legendary art director Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich, the creator of the
children's typographic delight Bembo's Zoo, is designing the
book.
All-American mom and Zen Buddhist priest
Karen Maezen Miller is completing Mother Zen: Small Consolations on the Bumpy Road to Bliss,
an intimate and inspiring guide to the Zen wisdom found in the everyday lessons of early
motherhood. Eden Steinberg acquired the book at auction for Shambhala Books' new Trumpeter imprint.
A journalist by training, Karen had a 20-year career as the owner of a
marketing and public relations agency before devoting herself to marriage
and motherhood. She and her family have the good fortune -- and grimy
fingernails -- of owning and maintaining Southern California's oldest private
Japanese garden, an 88-year-old, 7,500-square-foot backyard treasure.

In recent months Ted attended a wide range of writers' conferences and academic programs, conducting one-on-one sessions with authors and teaching his popular workshops on "The Business of Publishing: What Every Author Needs to Know" and "Writing a Nonfiction Book Proposal That Sells." In addition to offering his regular class at Book Passage bookstore, recent events included conferences sponsored by the Northern California Science Writers Association, Women's National Book Association, American Society of Journalists and Authors, several chapters of the California Writers Club, and the Society of Southwestern Authors in Tucson. He was also interviewed for a piece on publishing that appeared on public radio's Marketplace (RealAudio). He won a fellowship to the Jerusalem Book Fair. Last but certainly not least, endless thanks to our fantastic interns this past year: Eleanor Sananman, Mills College MFA student Georgette Todd, and author and SFSU MFA student Jenn Shreve, whose witty look at the joys of child-free living, Baby Not on Board, is coming in early 2005 from Chronicle Books. Thanks for reading this update. Best wishes for a happy and successful year. Click here to read the previous newsletter. |
