Father and son, Laird is a science journalist and Terry is an organic farmer. Their book Fresh: How Local Food Can Save the American Meal, forthcoming from Algonquin Books, is a thoughtful, balanced investigation of the ways that globalization is changing what we eat.

Laird is an experienced professional journalist and a former restaurant critic whose articles on health and the environment have appeared in TIME, Health, Reader's Digest, CNN.com and MSNBC. He has taught feature writing at San Francisco State University and received awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the California Newspaper Publishers Association. He is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the National Association of Science Writers and the Authors Guild.

Terry, who co-founded Sonoma Antique Apple Nursery in Sonoma County, CA with his wife Carolyn, speaks widely on the subject of sustainable agriculture. His efforts to preserve disappearing varieties of apple have garnered attention in dozens of publications, including Newsweek and Sunset magazines, the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, and many radio stations. He has served on the boards of the Community Alliance with Family Farmers, California Certified Organic Farmers and Sonoma County Farm Trails and speaks at many farming and gardening conferences.
