Gary Lorden, Ph.D.
Gary is the chairman of the
mathematics department at the California Institute of Technology in
Pasadena, California. He graduated from Caltech with a B.S. in
mathematics, received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University,
and taught at Northwestern University before returning to
Caltech. Over the last forty years Dr. Lorden has taught
statistics, probability and other advanced mathematics at all levels
from freshman to Ph.D. He is an active consultant and expert witness in
mathematics and statistics for a wide range of clients, including
government agencies, private companies and law firms. He is also the
chief mathematics consultant for the hit CBS-TV show NUMB3RS. Now he and co-author Keith Devlin (known to millions of NPR
listeners as "The Math Guy" on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday with Scott Simon) are writing The
Numbers Behind NUMB3RS: Solving Crimes with Mathematics, the
official companion book to the series,
explaining the actual mathematical techniques used by the FBI
and other law enforcement agencies to catch and convict criminals, which sold at
auction to Plume/Penguin Group.
