Gary Lorden Photo Gary Lorden, Ph.D.

Gary is the chairman of the mathematics department at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California. He graduated from Caltech with a B.S. in mathematics, received his Ph.D. in mathematics from Cornell University, and taught at Northwestern University before returning to Caltech.  Over the last forty years Dr. Lorden has taught statistics, probability and other advanced mathematics at all levels from freshman to Ph.D. He is an active consultant and expert witness in mathematics and statistics for a wide range of clients, including government agencies, private companies and law firms. He is also the chief mathematics consultant for the hit CBS-TV show NUMB3RS. Now he and co-author Keith Devlin (known to millions of NPR listeners as "The Math Guy" on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday with Scott Simon) are writing The Numbers Behind NUMB3RS: Solving Crimes with Mathematics, the official companion book to the series, explaining the actual mathematical techniques used by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to catch and convict criminals, which sold at auction to Plume/Penguin Group.
